Obamacare: A Trail of Broken Promises

By Senator Lindsey Graham

03/27/2012 9:47:00 AM

Last week marked the second anniversary of President Obama signing his health care bill into law.  And yesterday the United States Supreme Court began oral arguments about its constitutionality.

In the two years since enactment many of the structural flaws of Obamacare have become better defined and many of the dubious claims made to support its passage have been proven wrong.

  • President Obama was wrong when he said it would help our economy.  Over the past two years I have met with thousands of South Carolina business owners and job creators.  I’m still waiting for the first business owner to come tell me Obamacare has helped them create jobs.  Unfortunately, it appears I am not alone.  The Congressional Budget Office has said Obamacare will result in 800,000 fewer American jobs.
  • President Obama was wrong when he said if you like your health care you could keep it.  Recent figures from the Congressional Budget Office show that up to 20 million Americans will be dropped from their employer-provided health insurance and dumped into the government-run exchanges. Other research has placed this number even higher.  The Obama Administration has also selectively issued waivers to exempt politically connected supporters and union backers from elements of the law.  Thus far, the Obama Administration has issued at least 1,722 waivers covering 4 million people, including 2.2 million union members.
  • President Obama was wrong when he said Obamacare would make health care more affordable.  Americans were told health care premiums would go down by $2,500.  Instead health care premiums have risen by $2,200 since he has been in office.  As more and more provisions of Obamacare are implemented, health care premiums are expected to continue rising.
  • President Obama was wrong when he said Obamacare would save money and reduce the deficit.  New projections from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) show the new health care law will be much higher than initially projected.  The new cost is $1.76 trillion over the next decade.  On the state level, Medicaid expansion will cost the state of South Carolina an additional $1 billion over the next ten years.

Two years ago at the Obama health care bill signing the Vice President was overheard telling President Obama, ‘This is a big ‘effing’ deal.’  Unfortunately for them, two years later, the vast majority of Americans believe this has become a big ‘effing’ mess.

Americans know Obama health care has been a trail of broken promises.

I Oppose Obamacare Mandates Which Violate Religious Freedom

By Senator Lindsey Graham

02/09/2012 11:28:00 AM

The Obama Administration’s insistence that religious organizations violate their beliefs will be rejected by the American people.  Religious organizations should not be required to provide health care services that violate the pillars of their faith.  When it comes to Obamacare, this type of overreach continues to leave a bad taste in the mouths of the American people.

The Supreme Court recently held 9-0 that religious organizations can adopt hiring practices consistent with their religious tenets.  I’m confident that Congress will ultimately overrule Secretary Sebelius’s decision.
