WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today introduced a Senate Resolution designating July 22, 2020 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day.
“Glioblastoma is a devastating brain disease that has taken the lives of two of my very close friends and colleagues, Ted Kennedy and my dearest friend John McCain,” said Senator Lindsey Graham. “To honor their lives and the lives of those currently battling glioblastoma, this resolution shines a light on this terrible disease and urges collaboration between brain tumor researchers so we can eradicate this cancer.”
“More than 700,000 patients in the United States are living with the tragic diagnosis of some kind of brain tumor,” Senator Martha McSally said. “The deadliest of these tumors, glioblastoma, has taken the life of far too many, including Arizona’s own Senator John McCain. I am committed to delivering hope to these patients as they courageously battle this disease and raising awareness, starting with recognizing July 22, 2020 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day.”
“John McCain is my hero and his leadership is a constant inspiration to all Arizonans. Our resolution honors him and all Americans battling with this disease, and urges the nation to advance new treatments for glioblastoma and all brain cancers,” said Senator Kyrsten Sinema.
“Far too many Americans die each year because of glioblastoma, and Massachusetts in particular knows all too well the impact of this terrible disease. This resolution highlights the need to support research of new therapies for brain cancers; we must continue working to support this essential research.” said Senator Ed Markey.
The resolution:
- Designates July 22, 2020 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day.
- Encourages increased public awareness of glioblastoma.
- Honors the individuals who have lost their lives to glioblastoma, a devastating disease, or are currently living with it.
- Supports efforts to develop better treatments for glioblastoma that will improve the long-term prognosis of individuals diagnosed with glioblastoma.
- Expresses its support for the individuals who are battling brain tumors, as well as the families, friends, and caregivers of those individuals.
- Urges a collaborative approach to brain tumor research, which is a promising means of advancing the understanding and treatment of glioblastoma.
“I want to thank my cosponsors, Senator Martha McSally, Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Ed Markey” concluded Graham. “We are committed to combating and defeating this terrible disease.”
