Graham on Afghanistan Study Group Recommendations

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement following a briefing from the Afghanistan Study Group on their recommendations to Congress and the Biden Administration.

“I was briefed by the co-chairs of the Afghanistan Study Group about the findings in their final report following their lengthy study mandated by Congress. I cannot thank them enough for their hard work and tireless effort in this endeavor.

“I believe their findings are a roadmap to ensure the path we continue to pursue in Afghanistan ends in a sustainable peace.  Following forty years of war – twenty of which involved United States forces – we can bring this to a responsible end after certain conditions are met.

“After initial discussions with the Biden Administration, it looks like they will be very receptive to the recommendations being made by the Afghanistan Study Group.

“I am hopeful that we can build a bipartisan approach to Afghanistan, make sure that our hard-earned gains are not squandered, and that we can reduce our forces and footprints in a responsible way.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and I will never forget how this war started. We took our eye off Afghanistan, and that can never happen again.”
