WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) and Katie Britt (R-Alabama) today introduced a resolution affirming the acceptable outcome of the United States’ negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Earlier in the day, Graham and Cotton held a press conference to unveil the resolution.
“If Iran ever successfully acquired a nuclear weapon, I believe they would use it to further their radical religious regime. The regime openly talks about destroying the State of Israel and calls Israel and the United States ‘the Great Satan.’ President Trump, Senator Cotton, Senator Britt and I believe the only way to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon is for them to completely dismantle and destroy their entire nuclear program. Our resolution describes in granular detail what this looks like,” said Senator Graham. “To the Iranian regime: You claim all you want is a peaceful nuclear power program. You can have it, but you cannot enrich, and you must dismantle.”
“Four years of impotent, inconsistent, and weak foreign policy during the Biden administration gave Iran a golden opportunity to continue its development of nuclear weapons and to rebuild its economy after President Trump’s successful maximum pressure policy during his first term,” said Senator Cotton.
“I’m grateful for the strong leadership President Trump continues to exhibit across the globe. As the most pro-Israel president the United States has ever had, he is restoring credible American deterrence on the world stage by actively advocating for Israel’s security. I’m proud to join my colleagues in reaffirming our support for the dismantlement and complete destruction of Iran’s entire nuclear program, to protect our allies and to secure our nation from future threats,” said Senator Britt.
This resolution:
- Commends the Trump Administration for engaging in direct talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding its nuclear program;
- Recognizes the Islamic Republic of Iran’s decades of cheating, the regime’s barbaric nature, and its open commitment to destroying the State of Israel must be addressed in any negotiations; and
- Affirms support for:
- the complete dismantlement and destruction of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s entire nuclear program; and then
- an Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation (commonly known as a “123 Agreement”) between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, pursuant to section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 (42 U.S.C. 2153) that also requires the Islamic Republic of Iran:
- to adopt the IAEA additional protocols for verification of nuclear safeguards; and
- to forgo domestic uranium enrichment, the reprocessing of spent fuel, and the development or possession of any enrichment or reprocessing infrastructure or capacity.
