Graham Opposes Cloture on Nomination of Goodwin Liu

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on the nomination of Goodwin Liu to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

“His outrageous attack on Judge Alito convinced me that Goodwin Liu is an ideologue.  His statement showed he has nothing but disdain for those who disagree with him.  Those are debates that are reserved for the legislative and executive branches, not the judicial."

“Goodwin Liu should run for elected office, not serve as a judge.  Ideologues have their place, just not on the bench.”

“This episode -- along with his out of the mainstream writings -- requires me to take the extraordinary step of voting no on cloture.”

Testimony of Professor Goodwin Liu Before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on the Nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr. to the United States Supreme Court.

“Judge Alito’s record envisions an America where police may shoot and kill an unarmed boy to stop him from running away with a stolen purse; where federal agents may point guns at ordinary citizens during a raid, even after no sign of resistance; where the FBI may install a camera where you sleep on the promise that they won’t turn it on unless an informant is in the room; where a black man may be sentenced to death by an all-white jury for killing a white man, absent a multiple regression analysis showing discrimination; and where police may search what a warrant permits, and then some. Mr. Chairman, I humbly submit that this is not the America we know. Nor is it the America we aspire to be.”
