WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on the status of the appropriations process.
“I am very pleased to see the Senate will be taking up so-called ‘minibus’ appropriations bills next week. The Appropriations Committee, under the leadership of Senators Murray and Collins, has already moved all appropriations bills through the committee.
“While the spending levels and policy differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate are large, I hope regular order will prevail and we work to pass appropriations bills through both bodies. It is obvious to me this will be a challenge.
“The omnibus approach, where you put the vast majority of federal spending in a single bill - massive in size and scope - needs to stop. Under no circumstance will I support an omnibus bill and I want to encourage my colleagues to make that crystal clear as well.
“I do not want a government shutdown and realize we need emergency spending for our own military, natural disasters and conflicts. We have a lot of work ahead, but we need to follow regular order and work together to get the spending process completed.”
